Charles “Bud” Smith

Charles W. “Bud” Smith, 73, of Farmington, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March 15th, 2024 at Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown after a short, but very brave bout with pancreatic cancer. Bud was born September 24th, 1950 in Glen Dale, WV, a son of the late Jack and Irene Poland Smith.

Survivors include his two sons, Matt Smith with whom he made his home, and Jason Smith and his wife Cathy of Morgantown; a grandson, Austin Charles Smith of Hubbard, OH; four step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Zach Reeder, and Jordan and Taylor Thorn; two brothers, Dave Smith and wife Carol Sue of Mannington, and Gary Smith and his companion Susie of South Carolina; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and his most faithful canine buddy, Pebbles.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of more than 45 years, Linda Mays Smith, and a brother, Bob Smith.

Bud graduated in the class of 1968 from the former Mannington High School. For more than 20 years, he worked for Consolidated Natural Gas in various capacities. Bud was an assistant baseball coach in Farmington and was active in the North Marion High School Band Boosters during his son Jason’s four years there.

He was a member of the Mannington Elks Lodge #388 and was an early member of the Woodcutters who were responsible in large part for the construction of the football field at North Marion High School. For the last several months, Bud was a constant fixture at his son Matt’s business, Wright Dogs in Fairmont. He always enjoyed seeing the customers and his buddies there.

Bud was a sweet and simple guy. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures such as being out on the boat with his son Matthew, spending a lot of quality time with Pebbles, and had a kind word for everyone he knew. Even during his cancer diagnosis, he looked ahead and fought it with dignity and grace, and never feared whatever may have come his way.

Friend may join the family to honor Bud’s life and legacy at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St. , Mannington on Tuesday, March 19th from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, March 20th, from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 PM with Pastors Jason Marshall and Isaac Harmon co-officiating. Bud will be laid to rest next to his wife at the IOOF Cemetery in Farmington. Mannington Elks Lodge #388 will hold a memorial service for Bud at 7:30 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home to conclude the visitation, and will also hold a dinner in Bud’s honor at the lodge following the graveside service for those in attendance.

While flowers are welcomed at the funeral home and because of Bud’s love of animals, please direct contributions in Bud’s memory to the Marion County Humane Society, PO Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26554, or online at https://www.mchswv.com/donate. Masters Funeral Home is being assisted with Bud’s arrangements by his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Cathy Smith, with Smith Funeral & Cremation Care of Westover / Morgantown.
