Drexil E. “Gene” Powell, age 98 of Mannington, WV passed away on Wednesday, April, 22, 2026 at Rosewood Nursing Home in Grafton. He was born January 1, 1928 in Mobley, Wetzel Co., WV, a son of the late Irvin and Cora Satterfield Powell.
He is survived by his 8 children, Pamela Cole, Anita (Rodney) Triplett, Teri (Tim) Shock, Crystal (Herbie) Frye, Bradley Powell, Kevin Powell, Kelly (Carrin) Powell, and Tim (Cheryl) Powell. Gene is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Gene was also preceded in death by his loving wife Geraldine Norris Powell, his five siblings, Luda Wilson, Alta Roberts, Gladys Fisher, Chester Powell, and Dale Powell, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tim and Roseann Norris, two sons-in-law, Merle “Pete” Cole and Ric Cunningham, and his grandson Royce Frye.
Gene was a member of the Mannington Church of Christ for many years. He worked at many jobs including the City of Mannington as the Water and Street Superintendent from 1964-1971, the Board of Education from 1971 and retiring in 1990 having started as a plumber and electrician and retiring as the Director of Transportation. Gene served in the United States Army from 1946-1947 being stationed in Japan after WWII during the Korean Era in Occupational Forces.
Gene was actively involved in the Mannington community for many years serving as Mayor, as a member of the American Legion Post #40, the Director of Marion Co. Senior Citizens, a past president of the Lions Club, the Mannington Park Board, the Mannington Industrial Corp., a past president of the Buffalo Valley Association, a past president of the West Augusta Historical Society, the Executive Committee of Marion Co. Development Authority, and as a past trustee of Pleasant Acres Christian Haven.
The family would like to thank WV Caring Hospice of Marion Co. and Taylor Co as well as the VA Hospital for their care of Gene. They would also like to thank family, friends, and the church elders for visiting him.
Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington, WV on Friday, April 24, 2026 from 4-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, April 25, 2026 beginning at 11:00am with Evangelist Dr. Michael P. Reese officiating. Interment will follow at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.
