Ernest Roger Sponaugle, 90 of Flaggy Meadow Road, Mannington, WV passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010 at his residence. He was born July 24, 1920 at Coalton, WV a son of the late Eli and Bulaha O’Hara Sponaugle.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Bertha Louise Stevens Sponaugle of 69 years; 2 children, Janet Sharon Shawhan of Florida and Roger Lee Sponaugle and wife Betty of Mannington; 4 grandchildren, Mark Main and wife Kim of Kentucky, Shelly Olson of Florida, Denise Yost and husband Robert of Kentucky and Dennis Sponaugle and wife Terrie of Fairview; 9 great-grandchildren, Mark L. Main, Saunsirar Tucker, Charlotte Main, Amanda Flower, Samantha Steele, Adam Yost, Sydney Sponaugle, Devon Sponaugle and Alexis Haygood; 10 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by a grandchild, Amber Shawhan; 2 brothers, Earl and Joseph Sponaugle and 3 sisters, Evelyn Szarka, Arveda Purdue and Gladys McLean.
Ernest served on the CCC, (Civilian Conservation Corp.) from January 12, 1937 to June 1, 1937. He served in the United States Navy. He retired in 1977 from Bethleham Steel Corp, Mine #41 at Barrackville with 41 years of service. He was a master woodworker. He enjoyed recovering and restoring flywheel type engines.
Friends may call at the Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main Street, Mannington, WV on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 2-9 P.M. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the funeral home with Pastor Kenneth Keifer officiating. Burial will follow at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.
