Our beloved “Aunt Hoot”, Giulia Smith Ice, age 93, passed away of Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown. She was born June 12, 1925 at the Range, near Wadestown, WV. Giulia was alert and able to celebrate her birthday. What a gift! She was the second daughter of Jimmie and Ada Haught Smith.
Giulia attended school at Campbell’s Run near Metz, WV until the 8th grade. Then she graduated with the class of 1944 at Mannington High School. She worked briefly at Westinghouse, but was a “fixture” at McCrory’s (5 & 10) store in Mannington from 1944 until it closed in January 1986. She was a strong Republican Committee Woman and a faithful member, trustee, and treasurer at Logansport United Methodist Church. A truly left-handed wonder, Giulia was beautiful quilter, seamstress, crocheter, and crafter.
She is survived by her brother, John (Margaret) Smith of Mannington and her cousin, Mary Jean Hayes of Dent’s Run, who was like a sister to them. Aunt Hoot’s nieces and nephews whom she treated as her children are, Dollie (late Pedro) Tustin, Doretta (David) Bonnell, Darla (Rudy Banick) Porter-Wilson, Mark (Anne) Jones, Daniel (Chrissy) Jones, David (Alyssa) Jones, Jeff (Rhonda) Smith, Lisa (Keith) Robbins, and Jonathan (Giulia) Smith, and all their children. She also had one step-grandson, Alex Ice of Jupiter, FL, as well as her Ice in-laws and families.
In addition to her parents, Giulia was preceded in death by three infant siblings; two nieces, Draunda Sue Porter and Deborah Rae Porter; her two sisters, E. Pauline (late Ray) Porter and Geneva (late Albert) Jones whom both passed within the last nine months. Remaining close their entire lives, Giulia wanted to be with her sisters.
Giulia was married to the late Daniel Ice, and never ever removed her wedding band since the day he put it on her finger 50 years ago.
