
Gladys “Gay” Russell of Mannington passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of September 22, 2020, only 24 days short of her 100th birthday. She was born on October 16, 1920 in Gilmer County, WV, the daughter of the late Grover and Ella Crislip Stout. She was one of ten children. Gay was a 1940 graduate of Farmington High School. She married Donald K. Russell on March 21, 1942 and had four children, Joyce Thorne (Wayne Thorne), Cheryl King (Russell King), Donald G. Russell, and Roger Russell (Debbie Russell). She is also survived by a special friend, Mary Sheets.
Gay was a passionate sports fan, always cheering on the West Virginia Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. She enjoyed bowling, quilting, baking, and the activities at the Marion County Senior Center. She was a member of Flaggy Meadow Baptist Church.
Most importantly, Gay was a proud and loving mother and grandmother and is survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald K. Russell, who passed away on June 22, 1997. She was also preceded in death by daughter, Joyce Thorne, and son, Donald G. Russell and nine siblings: Opal, Betty, Dantia, Ruth, Creston, Roscoe, Bill, Hershel “Hoppy,” and Eugene.
The family will receive friends and family at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington on Friday, September 25, 2020. The visitation will be held from 12:00pm-2:00pm with the funeral service beginning at 2:00pm with Pastor Larry Kincell officiating. Burial will follow at Viewpoint Cemetery in Rachel. As we continue to recognize attending services during the COVID-19 situation may not be in the best interest for some, please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
