James Calvin Gaines, age 75 of Metz, West Virginia, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at his residence. He was born April 7, 1950 in Fairmont, WV a son of the late William Vance Gaines and Virginia Tucker Metz Gaines. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife Jenni Gaines who died in 2013.
He is survived by his son Jim Gaines of Metz, WV, his three daughters, Maggie Cochran of Clarksburg, Sara (Bob) Hawkinberry of Fairmont, and Missy Gaines of Ohio, and nine grandchildren, Faith Gaines, Zoey, Hunter and Tucker Hawkinberry, Jason Manning, Harley Swisher, Eli McMillion, Nicole and Nicholas. James is also survived by four brothers, Ray (Pat) Munson of Clovis, NM, Gary (Judy) Munson of Wadestown, William Vance Gaines Jr. of Louisiana, and Chuck (Patty) Metz of Morgantown, two sisters, Patricia “Petesie” Moorehead of Mannington and Sandra (Dave) Moore of Wadestown, several nieces and nephews, and his best friend Gary (Linda) Kennedy of Wadestown.
James attended Farmington High School and graduated in Ohio. He worked for and retired from CONSOL Blacksville #2 Mine with 33 years. He attended the Mannington Baptist Church and was a member of the Mannington Elks Lodge and the Mannington Moose Lodge. James enjoyed going fishing and hunting and loved to travel.
Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington, WV on Monday, June 16, 2025 from 2-7:00pm with a funeral service beginning at 7:00pm with Pastor Jason Marshall officiating. Cremation will follow as the final method of disposition.
