James Roger Chadwell, age 87, of Mannington, passed away of Thursday, April 13, 2023 at The Genesis Center in Fairmont. He was born May 19, 1935 in Clarksburg, WV, the only son of the late James Frank and Beryl Maxon Chadwell.
Mr. Chadwell was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School where he played in the band and was a member of the KIBO Club. He also played saxophone in a local jazz band during that time.
He enlisted in the US Navy, was stationed in Cuba, and honorably discharged four years later. He graduated from Fairmont State College with a business degree. He went on to work as an auditor for the WV State Tax Department. He joined First National Bank as a bookkeeping manager and loan officer. He later retired as an Assistant Vice President after many years of service.
Roger was a founding member of the BTD Sportsman Club, KIBO Club Alumni and participated in his high school reunions. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roger was a kind soul and will be greatly missed by his family and friends, including his longtime friends Cecil Boyce and Leon Cummings.
Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Wood Chadwell of Mannington, four children, James (Sabrina) Chadwell of Fairmont, Tamra (Allen) Fike of White Hall, Walter (Carrie) Chadwell of Bruceton Mills, and Calleen (David) White of Gaithersburg, MD, grandchildren Tyler (Stephen), Samantha (Julie), Leslie, Jesse, Hayden (fiancee’ Brooke), Madeline, Darby, and Jack, great-grandchildren Ciara, Piper, Asher, Lakeysha and Kareem. He is also survived by an extended family of in-laws both near and far.
The family will receive friends at Masters Funeral Home, 209 E Main Street, Mannington, on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 2-5 pm with funeral services beginning at 5:00 with Pastor Tim Edin officiating. His final resting place will be at the WV National Cemetery in Grafton with full military Rites at a later date.
Roger’s family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Genesis Center and the Amedisys nurses for the wonderful care during the last few months.
