Margaret Gene Carr Handley Capelety, age 94 of Mannington, WV passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Gene was born January 31, 1927 in Mannington, WV, the daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret Hall Carr. She married Lester Handley and the couple had seven children. She later remarried to Leonard Capelety. She has been residing with her youngest son, Michael David in her family home.
She graduated from Fairmont Business College and was employed at Westinghouse, the Fairmont Taxi Dispatch, and the Mannington Drapery Factory. She was active in the Shinnston Chapter of Buffalo Genealogical Society and was also an editor in both the Fairmont and Forks of the Buffalo Chapters. She worked with the Marion County Historical Society in producing and publishing the History of Marion County book. She was also the editor of “Gleanings”, the journal produced by the Marion County Genealogy Club.
She had hobbies of gathering family histories of her family and others. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting beautiful gifts for her family. She was an antique glass collector. She had a love for and raised pedigree Pekinese dogs. Gene loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by five daughters and two sons: Sarah Margaret “Margie” (Brent) Melton of Southaven, MS; Carolyn Jean Barker of Mount Vernon, WA; Shirley Joan (Robert) Couts of Port Washington, OH; Sheila Kathleen (Michael) Barker of Mannington, WV; Alice Lorraine (Ted) Hosaflook of Morgantown, WV; Lester Mark (Becky) Handley of Rivesville, WV; and Michael David Handley of Mannington, WV; fourteen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no public calling hours. A private service is planned to celebrate Gene’s life. Online condolences may be left at www.mastersfuneralhomewv.com. Interment will be at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family would like to give a special Thanks to all of Gene’s caregivers both at home and at Ruby Memorial. Masters Funeral Home in Mannington has been placed in care of the final arrangements.
