Mark Allen Gouzd passed from this life on Sunday, November 15, 2020. He was born June 3, 1961 in Painesville, OH to Joseph P. and Carole R. Gouzd.
Mark is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lora, his sons Zachary (Kelly) and Jeremy (Allie), and his grandson Oliver. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his father, Joe, and his mother, Carole, his sisters Christina (Jack) and Cynthia (Steve), brother-in-law Remy Petrucci, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leonard and Judy Myers, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Ruth Pigott, and his paternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Gouzd, and by his sister Melissa Petrucci.
Mark was a graduate of Mannington High School and later Fairmont State College. He began his career in land surveying but later became an employee in the engineering department of the Martinka and later Federal Number 2 mines. After transitioning to the safety department, Mark worked tirelessly at preparing miners young and old for the rigors of life underground as an instructor for the mine rescue program. Mark was always extremely proud of his mine rescue teams and their performance in various local, state, and national competitions. In the last several years, Mark worked as an extension agent for West Virginia University, where he was the manager of mine rescue and emergency response training at WVU’s Doll’s Run facility. He was also the WVU Collegiate Mine Rescue Team trainer.
Mark was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mannington where he was a lector, Eucharistic minister, and choir member. Mark’s strong faith not only sustained him and his family throughout life but also during the hardships of the past year.
Mark loved working on his farm and spending time with his family. He worked from sun-up to sun-down, whether planting a garden, baling hay, tending his three donkeys and his faithful companion Daisy the beagle, or building something new.

I will forever remember you!! You were always so kind and always made me smile! Such a fine man to make conversation with! I will most definitely miss seeing your face!! May God be with your wife, kids, and family as they go through such a heartbreaking time! Much Love, Jess Hicks/Thomas
Your family has a lot to be proud of. What a great individual. Even though we spent our careers on the opposite side of the coal industry, he always had the safety of the miners at heart. He sincerely cared about people’s well being. I’m very proud to have known him.

May the angels open their wings and embrace you in the kingdom of heaven. Love to Lora, Zach, and Jeremy. With sympathy, Susie and PJ Alasky
God rest the soul of this good and faithful servant. Prayers also for his family at this time of loss.
My deepest sympathies go out to Mark’s family. Mark was truly a great person and a friend. What I remember most about Mark was his love for his family. His family was never far from his thoughts. Mark was committed to excellence during mine rescue training, rescue competitions, and the safety and training of miners. I will always remember the times that we competed against each other at mine rescue contests, the training classes that we did together, and the actual mine emergencies that we were involved with. I will always remember Mark as a dedicated family man, a person who was committed to excellence and a true friend. My thoughts and prayers goes out to Mark’s family.
