Shirley Ann Smith “Gramma Shirley”, age 81, a resident of Mannington, formerly a long-time resident of Metz, WV entered the arms of Jesus on June 1, 2020.
Shirley will be celebrated for her wonderful legacy and valuable life lessons, as we take great solace and comfort in knowing that she rest in her eternal reward in Heavan, until we meet again.
Shirley was born December 1938 to parents Arlie Ray and Emma Pearl (Wilson) Berry. She was the last surviving member of the Berry family. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Mary Sole, Clara Jean Berry and Carolyn Sue Stutler; seven brothers: Roger, Robert, Don, Charlie, Jim, Ralph (Biggie) and Albert (Abe) Berry and her first husband, Gerald Eugene Hinerman.
Left to cherish her memory, continue with the traditions and family bonds she held so dear, her loving husband of 44 years, Richard (Rick) Smith of Mannington, her children: Randy Eugene (Vera) Hinerman and Marsha Ann (Bob) Delaney of Fairmont, Robert Ray (Julia) Hinerman and Lori Lea (Ervin) Harvey of Mannington; grandchildren: Sarah (Antonio) Marcial, Amiee (Nick) Biro, Jamie (Brendan) Marble, Victoira (Ritchie) Livengood, Melodi (Chris) Egress, Mandi (Timmy) Martin, Robert (Katie) Hinerman, Joshua (Mariah) Harvey, Lauren Harvey; and precious great-grandchildren: Trey Martin, Tenlea Martin, Dean Egress, Madison Marble, Adalynn Marble, Carter Biro, Brayden Livengood, Aaron Livengood, Ryan Livengood, Abigail Marcial, and Mila Harvey.
Days after Shirley’s passing, we are sure she lovingly escorted the two newest great-grandsons, Liam and Luca Egress, into this world by perfecting their finishing touched just before arrival. Shirley is also survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Shirley was Methodist by Faith, and was a graduate of Hundred High School where she was active in the Press Club, a cheerleader, thespian, a member of the Yearboob staff, and assistant librarian. She was determined and worked hard. She attended classes at Fairmont State University (FSU) taking night classes to qualify for her work with Marion School System. She served as a secretary for many local elementary schools, and then moved Marion County Board of Education Central Office where she worked until her retirement.
To all who knew her, Shirley’s personality was larger than life. She was their biggest support and cheerleader, often found on the sidelines and bleachers of sporting events, recitals, and concerts. She lived by example, never meeting a stranger, and was always being a constant state of support, love, grace, and understanding.
At her request, Shirley will be cremated and laid to rest at the Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will hold a private celebration to honor her beautiful life and memory at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in her honor.
“Blessed is she who has believed that the LORD would fulfill His promises to her.” (Luke 1:45)

Blessed indeed is my Aunt Shirley. Though many miles separated us, Aunt Shirley always made me feel at home when I came to visit. She opened her home and heart to me. She gave me that piece of my Father that I couldn't have here in Chicago. One of my favorite Summer's was with Aunt Shirley on her mountain in Metz, I can see her smiling sitting on her swing. Now she's on the Lords' mountain in heaven, reunited with all who went before her and someday I'll see her again. The Good Lord bless you all! Love from Chicago, Christine.
Please forward our comments to The Shirley Smith family.
We wanted to take a little time to share some recollections about Shirley who did such a great job for Marion County Schools across the years.
Patsy has such warm memories of Shirley at the Glover Gap school and at the board office as well. She was always so friendly, kind and outgoing and made people feel good just being around her! Shirley told such wonderful stories which Pat still shares with others to this day. Craig remembers her helpfulness and grace during his many visits to the board office to visit with Patsy.
Last, but not least, Pat remembers how Shirley was always so proud of her family. We will be making a donation in Shirley's memory to the American Heart Association.
I worked with Shirley in Mannington after her retirement from the board. She was a fantastic little lady. Your whole family is in my thoughts and prayers.
